Oil on canvas

Artist: Rembrandt van Rijn

The painting dramatizes a scene from the Gospel of Mark (4:35–41): a sudden storm threatens the disciples’ boat until Jesus calms the wind and waves. Rembrandt intensifies the narrative with Baroque dynamism—diagonal motion, violent seas, and chiaroscuro contrasts of light and shadow. Amid chaos, Christ remains serene at the right, while one figure near the mast, believed to be Rembrandt himself, looks directly at the viewer, implicating them in the scene’s terror and faith.
